Writing success
Congratulations to Faith Oxenbridge for winning the Sunday Star Times short story competition.
You can read her story here
This is what the judge had to say:
Commentary by Carl Nixon, judge of the Open Division of the Sunday Star-Times Short Story Competition. (nb: all stories were judged with the author’s name removed).
As is now usual for this long running and highly regarded competition this year’s entries were numerous and varied. There were more than 600 entries. They came from all over the country and reflected a wide range of ethnic backgrounds; Maori, Pasifika, Asian, and European, in keeping with New Zealand’s multicultural nature. There was also a pleasing diversity in genders, ages, sexual orientation, occupations and incomes of the characters. Stories of New Zealanders abroad added colour and variety. Judging them all was not easy. Here are my choices for the top stories of 2013.
The WINNER: What You Have, by Faith Oxenbridge
On first reading this story immediately struck me as a contender for the top prize. With subsequent rereading the writer’s seemingly effortless artistry became more and more apparent. A story that explores grief and the mental illness of a parent, it is however never bleak or overwrought. What You Have is told in the second person and by using you throughout it draws the reader in and makes them complicit in the events. Although this technique is difficult to sustain the author does not miss a beat. Equally difficult to sustain are the frequent shifts in time between past and present, but once again, they are never jarring, always timely, and in the service of the story. Beautifully controlled use of simile and metaphor and a wry tone in what could have been a depressing tale combine to make What You Have a clear winner.
Well done Faith!

International Day
This is a piece of writing from 11EFI written by the students in groups about their International Day experience. It was an amazing day enjoyed by our whole community.
On the 26th September 2013, the English Language
Learning Community celebrated International Day. Special guests were invited to
a welcome in the cafeteria to begin the day. Our Principal, Brent, spoke to the
assembled audience telling us that it is the people who are the most important
part of Hagley.
One important aspect of International Day at Hagley was the
fun everybody had. Throughout the day everyone had a smile on their face and a
warm hello to all the new friends they met. It was good to see the teamwork
displayed within the ethnic groups as they worked together to present their
culture, their heritage, their costumes and their food in the best way
possible.
Another aspect of the day was the food prepared by each
country involved in the day. In many cultures, hospitality is always
accompanied by food and the more food available the warmer the welcome. It was
certainly a very warm welcome this day. People visited each room where they
were greeted with an abundance of ethnic food to taste: sweet, sour, spicy,
colourful and aromatic foods were all offered. Visitors found the food very
tasty and often came back for seconds. They loved the samosas, the buchingae,
the baklava, the sushi, the falafel, the moon cakes, the varieties of rice and
the Chinese tea. They asked for recipes and how long it took to prepare the
food. The enjoyment was obvious as was the pride of the cooks who prepared it.
Along with the food preparation, students also wore their
national costumes, which were bright, colourful and interesting. The clothes
were often combined with dancing, singing and lots of noise. The beautiful
Korean and Chinese national dresses were exquisite, often made of colourful
silk and highly decorated. The African clothes were bright and were matched
with colourful headgear. Not only were the people dressed beautifully, so were
the classrooms. The Chinese outdid themselves with a technological light and
picture show. The Afghans displayed a pair of unique and very expensive large
carpets, which showed an Afghan bedroom decoration along with mattresses with
pillows.
Another important aspect of the day was the concert in the
cafeteria with the traditional music and dancing of each country. It was a visual and aural feast of cultural
movement and sound. From the rhythmic Samoan dance which transported the
audience to the beach to the very nationalistic Chinese dance and the
professionalism of the performers. The delicate movements of the Indian dancer
delighted the audience and the Koreans combined their dance with song. The
Japanese were strong and very loud performers, along with the Bangladesh and
Kazakhstan items. It was a fantastic show and a fitting way to end the day.
Throughout the day the weather continued to brighten until
by 2pm the day was sunny and warm, which reflected how everyone was feeling.
International Day 2013 at Hagley was a wonderful, memorable and exciting day.

Young Presenter's Award
We received the "Young
Presenters Award" from Plains FM 96.9!
The award was presented to us on the Plains FM’s Party Gliterrati evening of awards and
birthday bash in May.
For the past year and a half our ESOL students have been involved
with Plains FM 96.9. We record a show once a month. The students have presented
various topics including holidays around the world, adjusting to life in NZ,
sharing music and more. The show works as a question and answer session after
the initial short "speech". I have watched the students go from a
bundle of nerves in their first show to relaxed professionals as our radio
journey continues. The opportunity to share our voices on the radio has given
us real life situations to write about including writing scripts for the radio
programme and then writing reflection pieces after the radio program. It has
included chances to listen to our radio show as well. It has also given the
students and I another link to the greater Christchurch community. Going to the
Plains FM studio is very exciting and the staff there has welcomed us with open
arms. Naoko (studio manager) invites students in to watch her as she edits our
show and she "coaches" us through the show. Lizzie (the
program manager) welcomes us each month with open arms and the studio has a
welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
Check us out. Our show is called Hagley Culture Chat. It is on at 5 pm on the first Monday of every month.

Bridge Building competition
On the 2nd of August 2013, three Year 10 Graphics students (Hektor Amazinnia Coyle, Ruby Scott-Hewitt, Morgan Trestrail) took part in the Aurecon Australia /New Zealand bridge building competition.
These three students were selected because they earlier won the Yr 10 graphics inter-class competition for their bridge design.
To build the Aurecon competition bridge, students used a balsa kit provided by Aurecon, to build any type of bridge they wanted.
One of the requirements was that the bridge had to be 700mm long.
During the competition, Aurecon Engineers would then load the bridge with weights to determine its load failure point.
The winning bridge was then judged according to it top load weight, quality workmanship and how it looked aesthetically.
You can check out their effort on this clip
The results were that Hagley Community college won 2nd place for the Canterbury competition.
They received a total of $1300 in prize money for their efforts.
Thanks to Ryszard Dybka for his support and guidance.

Yr 11 Geography Field Trip
Earlier this year, the Yr 11 Geography class had a field trip to the Port Hills. The trip was aimed at looking at volcanism, marine erosion and fluvial erosion (and earthquakes) and how these processes have interacted to create the landscape we see today, and how it is still changing. They also looked at land use on the Port Hills and the impact of human activity on the land.
Kiera Heartford put together this clip (6 mins long) that shows what they did on the day.

Voice of Canterbury Choir Festival
Tuesday was a big day for our choir. The group spent the day at La Vida doing workshops and rehearsals for the Voice of Canterbury Festival.
The Festival vision is: "Our vision was to establish a choir festival that is popular music oriented and focuses on enjoyment of music and choral singing, rather than a competition between schools. The main aim of this event is to encourage performing amongst peers and as a community." (from Voices of Canterbury website )

Sports roundup
Basketball
Year 10 Boys - Up against a vastly improved Aidanfield team, our boys struggled to match their play. The boys never dropped their heads though, finishing with a flurry of points at the end of both halves. Final score was 49-21, with player of the day again being awarded to Ezra Wood for his fine shooting.
Junior Boys - Unfortunately for the junior boys, for whatever reason, they severely struggled with numbers this week. Up against the supremely skilled Christchurch Adventist team, they eventually succeeded with a 60-18 loss after such a strong start where they were well in the game for the first 20 mins.
Netball
Junior Girls - A much improved performance from the girls, they eventually triumphed 19-10 against a strong challenge from Aidanfield Christian School. Thanks must go again to Sheyanne for refereeing the girls.
Senior Girls - Another strong performance from the seniors saw them tough out a solid win against a talented Villa Maria squad 18-14.
Badminton
Boys - Unfortunately for the boys, they again struggled to field a full team which no doubt did not help. While most games were close against Cashmere 7-2.
Girls - Similar story as for the boys. While most games were extremely close, the girls struggled to close out any of their games and eventually lost the match 9-0.
Football
Girls - The girls squad had a great win against St Margaret's College 1-0, owing to a brilliant matchwinner from Liza Mckenzie. Great result girls!
Boys 7-a-side - Unfortunately our rather youthful boys team came up against a senior Kaiapoi High side who were simply too fast and powerful for our boys. Final score was 5-1 to Kaiapoi, with Mustafa Azimi showing great resolve to score our only goal.

I stumbled into their lair on accident, and found myself in a madhouse of reptilian decree. I immediately froze, in a vain hope they had not noticed me in my peculiarity, but my attempts were feeble, I had been seen. I felt a cold sweat and a shiver ran down my spine as they glared at me with beady black eyes from a nebulous of smoke and dust that choked the room.

Boys - The boys badminton team played against a senior side from Riccarton, and eventually went down 7-2. Special mention goes to Daniel Carvey for filling in for a team that struggles to field a 4-person team each week. Despite this adversity, theyb boys produced a gutsy performance, in managing to take a few games away from their opposition.
Basketball
Junior Boys vs Year 10 - The two Hagley boys teams entered in the Wednesday competition faced off against one another, with the result destined to be close due to their last match being a draw. The result was what some may suggest an upset, as the less fancied junior team defeated the Year 10s by 28-24. Led superbly in the closing stages by sharp-shooting Ezra Wood, the Juniors were extremely pleased with this result.
Football
Senior Girls - Our senior girls team faced off against a well-drilled Hornby High side and, despite a valiant effort, lost 3-0.
Netball
Junior Girls - With a team of just 7, the junior squad battled away against a Middleton Grange team that had pace and height on all areas of the court. The final result was 35-9, with player of the day going to Phoebe Gardiner, for persistence at centre throughout the entire match.
Senior Girls - The senior team produced a powerful performance, running out comfortable victors against Rangi Ruru by 32-13. A great result!

"Yellow Smile" by Field Skjellerup
This is a composition from Field Skjellerup in the Year 13 School of Music.
Field says "For this track I wanted to create an old school Drum and Bass/Jungle type of track. I collected a few sample packs with heaps of classic breaks and vocal cuts then arranged it in Ableton Live. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result."

School of Music student, Adam Webb, has created this piece that he has put on YouTube. He composed it on Garageband and you will notice a similarity to an old but famous song - see if you can guess! You can search for more of his music under the name GammaKiwi.

TodaysMeet
I have been using TodaysMeet in class with my 11Sci. A lad in my class posted 3 answers to worksheet. Others thanked him by posting back. He didn't have to look at them or talk to them, he doesn't like doing that. He looked like he grew 10cm taller. Check out TodaysMeet. Ask me or Andy or Sue Mc or Kim Swann how to use it if you need help http://todaysmeet.com/

Shape Poem
-->
A
descending
drizzle of tiny
clear crystals, hitting
the sharp blades of grass
and the glass of windows, sliding,
racing one another down to the pane.
Her reflection is captured as she
watches,
the image of her features almost
trapped in the
splattering glass. The pitters and
the patters accelerating
as she observes the sparkling droplets
collecting on the rim of
the panes. She watches intently as
ducks plop and paddle through
the Puddles, their webbed feet
disappearing beneath the shallow murky
surface. In a flash, they shake their
matted down, the yellow blur a bright
contrast to the drab fog. Her gaze
drifts from them but remains fixed on
the drizzle before her. And then,
suddenly, the rain abruptly comes to a
halt, everything still and silent.
Almost imperceptibly, the sun peeks out
from behind the clouds which conceal
it, illuminating. The
droplets remain clinging to the
blades of green,
glinting like tiny shards of glass.
It’s over. For now.
