On the 2nd of August 2013, three Year 10 Graphics students (Hektor Amazinnia Coyle, Ruby Scott-Hewitt, Morgan Trestrail) took part in the Aurecon Australia /New Zealand bridge building competition.
These three students were selected because they earlier won the Yr 10 graphics inter-class competition for their bridge design.
To build the Aurecon competition bridge, students used a balsa kit provided by Aurecon, to build any type of bridge they wanted.
One of the requirements was that the bridge had to be 700mm long.
During the competition, Aurecon Engineers would then load the bridge with weights to determine its load failure point.
The winning bridge was then judged according to it top load weight, quality workmanship and how it looked aesthetically.

The results were that Hagley Community college won 2nd place for the Canterbury competition.
They received a total of $1300 in prize money for their efforts.
Thanks to Ryszard Dybka for his support and guidance.
