Sports Results for the 18th and 20th of November

Volleyball
Junior Boys – A tough game against Riccarton, ending in a 2-0 defeat.
Junior Girls – A great game from our Hagley side, ending on a high 2-0 win over Rangi Green.

Football
Junior Boys – Christchurch Adventist outclassed Hagley, even our buzzer beater goal could help. Score 11-2.
Junior Girls Black – An equally difficult game vs Villa Green. Villa coming out on top with 11 goals to our 5.
Junior Girls Red – Lost by default.

Netball
Junior Girls – Had a blinding last game against Rudolf Steiner, winning 33-14. Awesome stuff girls!

So this concludes our sport for 2013! Thank you to all the students for participating and all the volunteers for helping out!

Sports Results for 11th and 13th November

Volleyball
Junior Girls – Played against a skilled Marian College side, Hagley couldn’t get into the flow of play, leading to a 2-0 loss.
Junior Boys – Lost by Default due to lack of numbers.

Football
Junior Girls Black & Red – The two Hagley teams played each other, making for a fun game! However the older Red side was victorious, 5-2.
Junior Boys – Had a great game against Kaiapoi, winning 9-7.

Indoor Netball
Junior Girls – An extremely close and well fought game against Christchurch Girls High School, just losing out in the last few seconds by one goal. End score, 15-16.

Softball
Hillview had a very good team with an incredible pitcher, great experience for our novice side but it did end in a 10-4 defeat.

A quiet week for sport as all the Senior have finished sport to complete exams J

Richard Townsend has released the next episode of "Ye Old Fool" - "Assassin's Return"
Phsich once again, is out to kill the king. But when the King and the Scotsman get trapped by an oncoming cage, it turns out that another villain is lurking in the shadows, and has been waiting for the King for a very long time.

Sports Results for 4th & 6th November

Volleyball
Senior Girls – Lost by Default.
Junior Girls – Had a great game vs Rangi Ruru leading to a 2-0 victory.
Senior Boys – This was the play offs for 3rd and 4th, with our boys managing to get bronze! A very entertaining game, end score 2-0 to Hagley.
Junior Boys – A tight game against Riccarton B, they just took the last game leaving Hagley with a 2-1 defeat.

Indoor Football
Senior Girls – Played a tough game against Hornby Gold, in the end neither teams could get on the board. Draw 0-0.
Junior Girls Black – This was a very hard game, with Christchurch Girls High School’s Pink team winning convincingly, 9-0.
Junior Girls Red – Christchurch Girls High School’s Green team won over Hagley, 1-0, in this low scoring game.
Senior Boys Black – Playing against Mairehau at Mairehau, the boys pulled out a stunning effort and won 18-0!
Senior Boys Red – On the flip side our Red team did not manage as well vs Hornby, being defeated 10-0.
Junior Boys – Had a close game against Papanui, ending in a 3-2 loss.

Indoor Netball
Senior Girls – Played excellent netball against St Margarets, winning 23-12.
Junior Girls – BYE.

Mixed Touch
Lost by default.

Softball
The team finally got a proper game vs Cashmere, unfortunately it ended in a loss 15-4.

This was the last week for Senior Sport as they are now heading into exam time. Good luck to all the seniors!

Congratulations to Faith Oxenbridge for winning the Sunday Star Times short story competition.

This is what the judge had to say:
Commentary by Carl Nixon, judge of the Open Division of the Sunday Star-Times Short Story Competition. (nb: all stories were judged with the author’s name removed).

As is now usual for this long running and highly regarded competition this year’s entries were numerous and varied. There were more than 600 entries. They came from all over the country and reflected a wide range of ethnic backgrounds; Maori, Pasifika, Asian, and European, in keeping with New Zealand’s multicultural nature. There was also a pleasing diversity in genders, ages, sexual orientation, occupations and incomes of the characters. Stories of New Zealanders abroad added colour and variety. Judging them all was not easy. Here are my choices for the top stories of 2013.

The WINNER: What You Have, by Faith Oxenbridge
On first reading this story immediately struck me as a contender for the top prize. With subsequent rereading the writer’s seemingly effortless artistry became more and more apparent. A story that explores grief and the mental illness of a parent, it is however never bleak or overwrought. What You Have is told in the second person and by using you throughout it draws the reader in and makes them complicit in the events. Although this technique is difficult to sustain the author does not miss a beat. Equally difficult to sustain are the frequent shifts in time between past and present, but once again, they are never jarring, always timely, and in the service of the story. Beautifully controlled use of simile and metaphor and a wry tone in what could have been a depressing tale combine to make What You Have a clear winner.

Senior Girls – Win by default against Rangi.

Senior Boys – The only volleyball team to get a game this week, and they made it count beating Christ College, 2-0.
Junior Boys – Win by default against St Bedes.

Football
Senior Girls – Didn’t play at their best this week, but still came away with a win over Catholic Cathedral, 4-2.
Junior Girls Black – Played a good game against Villa Red, ending in a 1-1 draw.
Junior Girls Red – Christchurch Girls High School Orange team managed a 2-0 win over Hagley.
Senior Boys Black – Had a tough game against Hornby, who narrowly got a 4-3 win.
Senior Boys Red - Showed extreme skill and talent against Kaiapoi, outclassing them 14-1! Nice work guys!
Junior Boys - Had a hard game away at St Bedes, resulting in a defeat, 5-4 to St Bedes.

Indoor Netball
Senior Girls – Considering they had low numbers and had to use junior players, they played great, however not quite good enough to beat Mairehau Red. End score 30-26 to Mairehau.
Junior Girls – Played fantastic against Rudolf Steiner leading to a 21-9 victory.

Mixed Touch
Due to low player numbers we lost by default.

International Day

This is a piece of writing from 11EFI written by the students in groups about their International Day experience. It was an amazing day enjoyed by our whole community.

On the 26^th September 2013, the English Language Learning Community celebrated International Day. Special guests were invited to a welcome in the cafeteria to begin the day. Our Principal, Brent, spoke to the assembled audience telling us that it is the people who are the most important part of Hagley.

One important aspect of International Day at Hagley was the fun everybody had. Throughout the day everyone had a smile on their face and a warm hello to all the new friends they met. It was good to see the teamwork displayed within the ethnic groups as they worked together to present their culture, their heritage, their costumes and their food in the best way possible. 

Another aspect of the day was the food prepared by each country involved in the day. In many cultures, hospitality is always accompanied by food and the more food available the warmer the welcome. It was certainly a very warm welcome this day. People visited each room where they were greeted with an abundance of ethnic food to taste: sweet, sour, spicy, colourful and aromatic foods were all offered. Visitors found the food very tasty and often came back for seconds. They loved the samosas, the buchingae, the baklava, the sushi, the falafel, the moon cakes, the varieties of rice and the Chinese tea. They asked for recipes and how long it took to prepare the food. The enjoyment was obvious as was the pride of the cooks who prepared it.

Along with the food preparation, students also wore their national costumes, which were bright, colourful and interesting. The clothes were often combined with dancing, singing and lots of noise. The beautiful Korean and Chinese national dresses were exquisite, often made of colourful silk and highly decorated. The African clothes were bright and were matched with colourful headgear. Not only were the people dressed beautifully, so were the classrooms. The Chinese outdid themselves with a technological light and picture show. The Afghans displayed a pair of unique and very expensive large carpets, which showed an Afghan bedroom decoration along with mattresses with pillows.

Another important aspect of the day was the concert in the cafeteria with the traditional music and dancing of each country.  It was a visual and aural feast of cultural movement and sound. From the rhythmic Samoan dance which transported the audience to the beach to the very nationalistic Chinese dance and the professionalism of the performers. The delicate movements of the Indian dancer delighted the audience and the Koreans combined their dance with song. The Japanese were strong and very loud performers, along with the Bangladesh and Kazakhstan items. It was a fantastic show and a fitting way to end the day.

Throughout the day the weather continued to brighten until by 2pm the day was sunny and warm, which reflected how everyone was feeling. International Day 2013 at Hagley was a wonderful, memorable and exciting day.

Volleyball
Senior Girls – Loss by default to Unlimited.
Junior Girls – Had a great game vs Kaiapoi, leading to a 2-0 victory!
Senior Boys – Due to low player numbers we lost by default to Christ College.
Junior Boys – A different story for the junior boys, outclassing Christ College 2-0, nice work guys!

Football
Senior Girls – Our girls played great football against Christchurch Girls High Schools’ Red team, winning 3-1.
Junior Girls Black – This team also had an excellent game beating Villa Green, 4-1.
Junior Girls Red – We can’t win them all and after a hard game Villa Red managed to take the 7-3 victory.
Senior Boys Black – Had a blinding game! Finishing in a 10-0 win over Kaiapoi. Game of the week!
Senior Boys Red – Won by default against Christchurch Adventist.
Junior Boys – Had a tough game vs Hornby ending in a 9-1 loss.

Netball
Senior – Won by default to Linwood Girls.
Junior – Managed a good win over Christchurch Girls High Schools’ Yellow team, 13-9.

Mixed Touch
St Andrews brought their A game and won convincingly, 12-0. However our team show huge improvement from last week and played well in the circumstances.

Softball
Won by default against St Andrews.

World Refugee Day Art Competition

Sushan Gurung and Taiba Alawi received certificates from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for participating in UNHCR World Refugee Day 2013 Art Competition.

They were applauded for the artistic and creative skills shown in capturing the theme of “1 Family torn apart by war is too many.” Their artwork can be found on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees website. Well done to Sushan and Taiba for raising awareness about refugee issues creatively!

Dance Company excels

In September, the Hagley Dance Company presented an evening of amazing pieces. This was a concert showcasing their work from the year.

Called "Personae", the evening was presented by Artistic Director Candice Egan with additional choreography by Fleur de Thier. The costumes were designed and made by Vicki Dixon and the School of Fashion.

Sports round up for 15th & 16th October

Volleyball
Senior Girls- had a BYE.
Junior Girls- had a slow start but got into a good flow, and won the ‘friendly’ game at the end. Unfortunately they lost 2-0 against Papanui.
Senior Boys – a loss to Catholic Senior B 0-2, however the second set was very close.
Junior Boys – good form through the game led to a solid win against Burnside Green 2-0.

Football
Senior Girls- a great game vs Villa Blue, our girls were up by one but a last buzzer beater goal was scored by Villa leaving it a draw, 6-6.
Junior Girls BLACK- a close game ending in a loss 3-2 against Christchurch Girls High School Orange.
Junior Girls RED – Christchurch Girls High School Pink took advantage of the home court advantage and played hard, leaving  Hagley with a 13-0 defeat.
Senior Boys BLACK – a convincing win over Christchurch Adventist, 5-0. Great job guys!
Senior Boys RED – Hagley won by default over Mairehau Black.
Junior Boys- Lost by default to Lincoln Red 10.

Netball
Senior Girls – a hard fought game ending in a narrow loss to Marian Red, 16-19.
Junior Girls – won by default against Papanui Green.

Mixed Touch
Middleton Grange outclassed our team, leading to a 17-0 loss.

Softball
Due to so few numbers from both Aidenfield and Hagley, we won by default. However both teams had a friendly game and a practice session.

Journalism and Music

Field Skjellerup-Reid from the School of Music has been taking Year 13 Journalism this year and as part of his assessment he has created a website that showcases New Zealand's underground music producers. You can see the result of his work here

Young Presenter's Award

We received the "Young Presenters Award" from Plains FM 96.9!

The award was presented to us on the Plains FM’s Party Gliterrati evening of awards and birthday bash in May.

For the past year and a half our ESOL students have been involved with Plains FM 96.9. We record a show once a month. The students have presented various topics including holidays around the world, adjusting to life in NZ, sharing music and more. The show works as a question and answer session after the initial short "speech". I have watched the students go from a bundle of nerves in their first show to relaxed professionals as our radio journey continues. The opportunity to share our voices on the radio has given us real life situations to write about including writing scripts for the radio programme and then writing reflection pieces after the radio program. It has included chances to listen to our radio show as well. It has also given the students and I another link to the greater Christchurch community. Going to the Plains FM studio is very exciting and the staff there has welcomed us with open arms. Naoko (studio manager) invites students in to watch her as she edits our show and she "coaches" us through the show.   Lizzie (the program manager) welcomes us each month with open arms and the studio has a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Zen Mantra

Congratulations to Sam Perry who has been given a NZ on Air Making Tracks Grant of $10,000 for Zen Mantra - Body Surfers. This is a huge achievement and has a long list of criteria that must be met before you can apply. This includes having a fan base, business plans and a good track record, as well as a strategic plan of what you will do with the money to improve the quality of your song or video.

Intermediate Boys Basketball vs. Papanui Junior – Draw, 26-26, continued to overtime then drawed again. Hagley goes up because they are the higher ranked team.
Intermediate Girls Basketball vs. Rangi Ruru Intermediate Black – Win, 34-8.
Senior Boys Basketball vs. Hillmorton – Loss 46-47.
Senior Girls Basketball vs. Rangi Open Green – Win, 38-30.

Cantamaths

On Wednesday August 14, Hagley competed in the annual CANTAMATHS competition, held in the CBS Arena by CMA - the Canterbury Mathematics Association. Two teams, one each in the year 9 and 10 comps attended the event after practising during Monday lunchtimes through terms 1 and 2. Their coaches, Angela Brett and Bela Adash were both very pleased with the teams' achievement. "Our year 9s did really well, considering the amount of algebra in this years questions, and the year 10 team, who hadn't practised much as a unit, surprised us by getting 45 points (the winning teams only got as far as 75 points this year) which I think is a Hagley record - certainly since I've been coaching!"

Bela and Angela look forward to seeing how the year 9 team will do next year, as their algebra improves and after they've known each other for longer. They also encourage any junior student interested in maths to jump in - you don't have to have been part of the competition this year to try out for the year 10 team!

Top 10 Rock Quest

Congratulations to Grace Jones and Kenzie Middleton, from the School of Music, who have made it to the Top 10 Rock Quest solo/duo section for New Zealand. There are 25 regions who all had finalist who were eligible for selection to the final. They had to put together a clip on YouTube for the judges and a set of industry musicians then selected the top 20. Then it went to another set of musicians who selected the top 10.
